My career started with six piano lessons given to me for my 4th birthday and my first recital was performed at a concert with my family. I joined The Royal Army Service Corp in 1964 and took up the alto saxophone. After retirement from the Army I studied music and conducting at The Welsh College of Music and Drama graduating three years later.
Having taught the saxophone and piano privately I went back to full time education, again as head of music, and taught at various schools in Berkshire and Surrey until I retired in 1999. I took over the baton from Mike Cadwallader in August 2001. My intention is to continue the great work he achieved with the band by encouraging them to an even higher playing standard.
I would like to recruit more young musicians and increase the band’s repertoire to maintain, and hopefully improve, its excellent reputation within the local community and become better known further afield.
